A little less than a year ago I tried my hand at stand-up comedy for this newsletter. I’d always wanted to do it but I had been too afraid. But with the motivation of Trial & Error that pushes me out of my comfort zone all the time, I did it. The best part was that I absolutely loved it. I loved the challenge of it. I loved that it made me uncomfortable. I loved that it pushed me to think about a whole new way to communicate.
But what I never really envisioned or planned for was the possibility of doing a real show. It took me about four months to go back to open mic night and when I did it was honestly pretty terrible. It was in the midst of the COVID wave in January and very few people were there. I don’t know if my jokes were any good, but I do know that there were very few laughs. That experience kind of scared me off from trying again for a while. But this summer I went back and some of my friends came along. One of the more experienced comedians, Sylvia Mc Bateman, was helping run the open mic night. It turned out that she used to work with my friend Estevan’s wife. After the show she noticed him and we all started talking. I told her how this was only my third time performing and she said I did a great job. That felt good to hear, but I also know she probably would have said that no matter what. So I didn’t think much of it.
Then later that week she hit me up on Instagram. She asked if I was free September 29 and interested in performing at a show she was producing. I couldn’t believe it. I tried to emphasize just how little experience I had in this thing but she didn’t seem to mind. So on September 29, less than a week before my one-year stand up anniversary, I’ll be doing five minutes of comedy before a group of much more experienced, much funnier people perform with Sylvia headlining the whole thing. It’s gonna be super fun (and terrifying).
Since I’m only getting five minutes please don’t come if you just want to see me. But if you love comedy and want to see a great, clean, show full of very funny people I would love for you to come to The Comedy Arena in McKinney, TX on September 29.
