I can’t do it anymore.
I can’t sit in another boring speech, presentation, meeting or pitch. I just can’t. Life is too short to waste time listening to unprepared, unengaging, unconnecty speakers.
Yes, unconnecty is a word, trust me, I know words. The best words. Many people have called me and told me that I know the best words.
And unconnecty describes most presentations that I, and you, have to sit through at work, at conferences, at school events, at weddings, and more.
I get it, most people aren’t good at public speaking. In fact, 75% of people say they have a fear of it.
And I know that means there’s something wrong with my brain because I don’t fear it. But if you subscribe to this newsletter you already knew there was something wrong with my brain. That’s why you’re here…I think.
It stands to reason that if 3/4 of people in the world are afraid of something they’d be bad at it. Like, I’m terrified of helicopters. I would be terrible at flying a helicopter. If you asked me to do it I’d be sweating bullets, shaking, freaking out.
You know why?
Because in addition to being afraid of helicopters, I also know nothing about how they work. So, of course, you wouldn’t ask me to fly one without proper training by an experienced instructor.
If I did get training from said instructor, I may still have a healthy fear of helicopters, but I would at least be more confident in my ability to fly one. I’d never become the world’s greatest pilot, but I would be able to fly one if needed. And we all know how often that need comes up in life.
Point is, most people fear public speaking because they rarely have to do it and they don’t have any help. They don’t receive any one-on-one instruction from an expert who can walk them through the basics, show them tips and tricks, and give them the confidence they need to succeed. Sure, even with great instructions and practice, most people won’t become world-class speakers, but they’ll be able to succeed when there’s a need. And there are a lot more needs to speak publicly in life than to fly a helicopter.
If you’re in business you speak publicly in tons of situations, from running a team meeting, to pitching to investors or clients, to doing sales. These situations require the same ability to connect and engage your audience as a speech in front of 1000 people.
In every situation you could benefit from being a speaker who connects with authenticity, humor, and confidence.
Now you know the problem and the solution. Now I’m going to tell you who provides the solution: Someone else.
Just kidding, it’s me. Obviously. I always think the answer is me.
But this time I actually have a reason to believe that. I have the combination of experiences and skills to help people greatly improve their public speaking skills. I’m a stand up comedian, our main job is connecting with audiences in authentic ways. If a comedian can’t connect with their audience instantly, then the whole show is going to fail.
In addition to being a stand up, I’m a content marketer and writer. So my writing skills allow me to help people craft better speeches, presentations, and pitches, while my stand up skills can be used to train people how to become engaging speakers.
I’ve been building out this offering for a little over a month and I have huge plans for where this can go. For now though I’m starting with one-on-one speaker coaching. Ideally my clients will be business leaders and founders looking for consistent coaching to improve their skills as they pitch to investors or speak to large conferences.
In these early stages, however, I’m just looking for anyone who has an upcoming presentation, pitch, or speech of any kind who would like to sit down with me for an hour and hone their talk together.
I’ve already worked with one client who had just launched an AI company. He was pitching it to a big tech conference in San Francisco in a few days. We sat down and created a pitch that was engaging, informative, and a little bit funny. He came away super thankful and confident for the help I provided. Here’s what he had to say about this time:
After a decade in tech in San Francisco, I've seen dozens of onstage tech demos. Many can be hard to sit through, so I promised I would not be like that when I had my chance to present on stage. The time I spent with Scott helped me workshop new ideas and streamline my speech, and I walked onstage confidently knowing I was prepared and ready for the moment.
Most importantly, his pitch went great. He was so confident that he even did some crowd work at the beginning, which he said led to a more engaged audience. At the end of his talk he asked the attendees to sign up for the waitlist for his product. They reached their sign up goals and were booking out sales demos for weeks after the talk.
Do you have any kind of speech upcoming you need help with? If so, please either respond to this email or send an email to scott@bedgoodmarketing.com. As a subscriber to Trial & Error I’ll give you a one hour session for free in exchange for a testimonial after your speech.
Examples of speeches I could help you with:
Business conference talks
Business meetings
Business pitches
Wedding toasts
Eulogies
Sermons
Spousal arguments (but only if you’re right)
If you think you’d ever like to improve your speaking skills, now is the time to reach out. Soon these sessions will be high dollar and geared towards business leaders. I’m also building out team trainings and eventually a course. For now though, it’s one-on-one training to work out my messaging and systems.
Also, please put me in touch with anyone who might need my services. Reach out to the last person who subjected you to a boring, disorganized, unconnecty presentation and tell them I can help.
Here’s my one-sheeter describing my services if you’d like to forward it along.
